An exciting adventure in the lava caves of the Snæfellsjökull glacier
What we will see
Snæfellsjökull, a glacier on top of a volcano
Snæfellsjökull, the legendary lava caves
Grundarfjörður, a charming place to start and finish
What we will do
Our coach leaves the port of Grundarfjörður for a panoramic tour of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, where we meet our tour guide.
This glacier is unusual because it has formed on top of a volcano, and was immortalised in Jules Verne's timeless 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'.
Once we have put on our helmets and taken a torch, we are ready to enter the lava cave.
Inside we discover two main sections: the upper section has some interesting, unique, lava formations; the lower section can only be reached by a long, narrow staircase leading to an underground cave, which had remained hidden for thousands of years.
As we walk along, our exceptionally well-prepared tour guide will tell us everything we need to know about the geology and legends of this cave.
When we reach the lower section, all the lights will be switched off and, perhaps for the first time in our lives, we can experiment the thrill of total darkness.
What you need to know
Before entering the cave, each participant will receive a helmet and a torch.
