Description An ideal excursion for those who love nature, adventure and sport: an exciting kayak tour of Gatún Lake, amidst dense tropical vegetation and unspoilt islands, followed by a visit to discover how Panama Canal operates at Agua Clara locks.

What we will see
  • Gamboa Rainforest Resort: hotel in the heart of the tropical rainforest
  • Motor boat ride to 'Sounds of Silence' island
  • Kayaking on Gatún Lake: a huge variety of flora and fauna
  • Agua Clara locks visitor centre

What we will do
  • We will begin our excursion leaving the port of Colón on a comfortable coach and head to Melia Resort in Colon City.
  • When we reach the resort, we will enjoy a 20-minute motor boat ride to one of the most remote islands in Gatún Lake, 'Sounds of Silence' island.
  • We will have a light snack here before starting our kayak adventure on Gatún Lake. This large artificial lake that provides water to operate the canal locks was created between 1907 and 1913 along with a dam of the same name, and it is dotted with more than 100 islands with a huge variety of flora and fauna.
  • After our kayak tour, we will return to our starting point and travel by coach to Agua Clara locks, where we will see how the canal’s lock system operates at the visitor centre. A series of three lock chambers lifts the boats to a height of 27 metres above sea level inside Gatún Lake. After being raised, the ships are lowered at the end of their transit into the other ocean.
  • After seeing the locks in action, we will board our coach again and return to the ship.
