Description A special and unusual excursion between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. On board a luxury period train, we will discover the Panama Canal and its unique geography with lakes and lush rainforests, and we will have the opportunity to see and understand the complex lock system that forms the basis of the region’s entire economic activity.

What we will see
  • Ride in a luxury period train
  • Gatún Lake and rainforest of the Panama Canal: exceptional biodiversity
  • Agua Clara Locks Observation Center: lock system and ships crossing

What we will do
  • We will leave the port on a comfortable coach and, after a short journey, we will reach Colón railway station where a very special train will be waiting for us. It is a fully operational luxury period train from 1938, which is reminiscent of the golden age of train travel. Its passenger carriages have luxurious wooden panels and tables, carpet, soft lighting, wooden blinds, toilets, wide windows to admire the scenery and outdoor viewing points so that passengers can go outside and smell the scent of the rainforest.
  • We will board the train to the Pacific terminal of the Panama Canal. On the journey, we can admire some of the main points of interest in the area while our guide provides information on the history of Panama and construction of the canal. * We will also be offered a light snack and a drink on the train.
  • Some of the magnificent places we can see from the train include Gatún Lake, which provides the water required to operate the Panama Canal lock system, and the thriving, dense rainforest, famous for its exceptional biodiversity. It is home to over 100 species of mammals, 525 species of birds and 124 species of reptiles and amphibians. The rainforest is also very important for the national economy and the entire canal area, both from a tourism and nature perspective.
  • When we reach Panama railway station, we will get off the train and board a coach that will take us to Agua Clara Locks Observation Center, where we can see the canal’s lock system from the top floor and understand the mechanism that allows ships to cross the Isthmus of Panama and move from one ocean to the other. Depending on the dimensions of each ship, it is possible to see one to three ships pass through at the same time.
  • After the visit to the observation centre, we will return to the port.

What you need to know
  • The excursion includes a snack and water, which will be served on the train.
  • You are advised to wear comfortable clothing.
