In a nutshell

What does volcanic wine taste like? You'll find out at the foot of Mount Etna, in the historic Cantine Russo winery. Here you'll walk through the vineyards and learn the local history and production methods. All this at over 700 meters above sea level, with a view that stretches from the Alcantara valley to the ancient Norman town of Castiglione di Sicilia.

Main stops
  • Cantine Russo, winemakers since 1860
  • Wine tasting with snacks

The programme
  • Cantine Russo and its vineyards are located in the village of Solicchiata, on the north-western side of the Etna National Park. Winemakers since 1860, they will tell you their wine history and explain the particular features of how wine grown on volcanic soil is produced.
  • Walking through the winery's vineyards, you'll get a close-up view of the grapes used to produce volcanic wine. You'll be 700 meters above sea level: the panoramic view of Etna and the Alcantara Valley from here is bound to make a splash on your Instagram.
  • And here's the moment you've really been waiting for: a selection of wines made by Cantine Russo, including the red 2014 Contrada Crasà Etna DOC and rosé 2017 Rampante Etna Rosato DOP. And as you can't drink on an empty stomach, there will be some local appetizers too, including cunzato bread, salted ricotta, mozzarella, olives and other delicacies.
