What we will do
  • The first testimony of the ancient Byzantine capital that we find before us as we get off the coach is the Hippodrome of Constantinople, of which there are only a few remains and part of the monuments that used to decorate its centre.
  • In its immediate proximity we find the famous Blue Mosque, whose official name is Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Renowned for its architectural harmony, proportion and elegance, it is truly unique as it is the only original mosque in the world with six minarets.
  • We continue towards Hagia Sophia, i.e. the Church of the Holy Wisdom. Originally the largest Christian cathedral of Byzantine rite worship, it and was built above an ancient church dating back to 360 AD and was converted into a museum during the last century.
  • The walk continues as far as the Topkapi Palace, a large complex surrounded by walls located on the banks of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horns and once the residence of Ottoman Sultans.
  • We then remain enchanted by an imposing underground construction dating back to Justinian times in the 6th century known as Basilica Cistern: it is an astonishing masterpiece, the largest and most magnificent covered cistern in Istanbul.
  • After exploring the numerous gems to be found in the city centre, we now have the pleasure of embarking on an exclusive cruise along the Bosphorus where we are able to spot and admire the Dolmabahçe Palace, the Beylerbeyi Palace and some of the remaining towers of Anadolu Hisari, the Anatolian Fortress located where the city of Istanbul meets the Black Sea.
  • We then visit two famous characteristic covered markets: the folkloristic Spice Market with its exotic mix of colours, aromas and flavours and the huge Grand Bazaar.
  • We explore the aisles and alleyways that make up this huge market which is divided into a older covered section and a modern open-air section at our own leisure before taking part in an interesting presentation on the history of how Turkish carpets are made.
