The programme
  • Our pleasant walk around the picturesque city of Visby starts in one of the places that testify its past greatness: when the city’s splendour was at its peak - thanks to the fact that it was the only Swedish city to be a member of the Hanseatic League - Almedalen used to be the wharf area. It is now a peaceful oasis in the centre of Visby with lawns, gardens and a charming lake. At the crossing between Strandvägen and Strandgatan, we also admire the old towers part of the Medieval city wall, including one of the oldest constructions in the city dating back to 1100: the Kruttornet, i.e. the gunpowder tower. We continue towards the Old City where and, together with our guide, we stroll along the characteristic cobbled alleyways, admire historic merchant houses and ruins of ancient churches left unaltered as a precious testimony of the past and immerse ourselves in the marvellous atmosphere that only a Medieval town can create. The last stop on our pleasant tour into Visby's past is the imposing St. Mary’s Cathedral dating back to 1225, which is both a place of worship and precious cultural heritage.
